It’s a new act for Mousetrap Theatre, a Moreton Bay theatrical institution that will soon be moving to a renovated venue in Redcliffe.
After building evaluations determined that their preexisting location was structurally unsound, the beloved theatre company found themselves without a permanent home.
According to Karen Matthews, President of Mousetrap Theatre Co Inc, the group had used hired venues since the middle of 2022 until an exciting offer was put forward.
“Council have offered us the ground floor of The Sutton Centre in Sutton Street, and they are currently renovating the space,” Ms Matthews said.
Ms Matthews said that the venue will contain the main stage as well as a second area for smaller performances, workshops, rehearsals and meetings – with preparations for a stellar unveiling.
“We are planning an official opening, hopefully in March, but the date is dependent on when the venue is handed over to us and we can complete our fitout,” Ms Matthews said.
“We will be inviting some members of Council, the local media and any of the public who would like to come and celebrate with us.”
Honoring Mousetrap Theatre’s Legacy
After the facility is completed, the group plans to resume a regular schedule of activities, including a weekend of one-act plays in May and the annual Murrumba Drama Festival in June.
With the offer of a five-year lease, Mousetrap Theatre is looking forward to once again “putting down roots” after a period of upheaval clouded a 70-plus-year legacy.
“Mousetrap Theatre began in 1952 as the Redcliffe Music and Arts Society, with the name Mousetrap adopted in the 1980s,” Ms Matthews said.
The group moved into a building in the Redcliffe Showgrounds in 1966 and stayed there until 2022, offering plays, musicals, cabaret-style productions, youth performances, one-act plays, pantomimes and an annual drama festival.
Ms Matthews said that Mousetrap Theatre was grateful to everyone “who had given time, money, help, guidance and advice and kept us alive and performing under less-than-ideal circumstances.”
“A new building brings new opportunities to entertain the people of the Peninsula and beyond,” she said.
