This year, Scarborough State School celebrates 100 years as one of Moreton Bay’s oldest and most respected schools, marking a century of education and community spirit.
The school officially opened with an enrolment of 30 students on 9 March 1925, by Mr RJ Warren, after local efforts highlighted the need for the school. To celebrate student achievements, Redcliffe Mayor Ald JB Dunn generously donated four gold medals. These medals were awarded for outstanding accomplishments, including the best history of Redcliffe, the best essay on district resources, the best educational advancement and the best attendance. This initiative highlighted the school’s commitment to recognising and encouraging excellence within its student community.
The school’s colours, logo and slogan, ‘Cresco, I Grow’ have remained unchanged and the phrase ‘Pride of the Peninsula’, coined by long-serving teacher aide Ann Whiting, was adopted by principal Peter Storch and deputy Bruce Guscott.
Scarborough State School has remained a place where generations come together, with former students returning as teachers and even enrolling their own children. Claire Klich, who attended the school as a preschooler in 1993, returned as the Japanese teacher in 2014 and later served as acting deputy principal. She described the school as exceptional for many reasons.
“The people and the grounds make the school what it is,” Claire said. “We have huge ovals, playgrounds, a swimming pool and some of the most outstanding students and staff you could imagine.”
Claire’s children now attend the school, continuing the family’s strong bond with the school community.
Centenary Celebrations and Trivia Night
To celebrate the school’s anniversary, a trivia night will be held on Saturday, 8 March to honour its rich history and launch a year of festivities. Open to the public, all proceeds will go towards school improvement projects. The night promises plenty of fun, featuring trivia questions about the school’s history.
Scarborough State School has thrived for 100 years thanks to its strong community spirit. The trivia night celebrates this legacy, bringing people together for a fun evening while supporting the school’s future.
Tickets are $20 per person or $100 for a table of six players (excluding booking fees). Platters will be available to pre-order through the school tuck shop.
