One local high school introduced a special program designed to enhance the physical and mental capabilities of young students.
The Blue EDGE (Educate, Develop, Grow, Empower) program at Clontarf Beach State High School was introduced in September and made an incredible impact on the participating students.
HoD Engagement at Clontarf Beach State High School, Ashleigh Machin, said the initiative was created with the intention of fostering stronger personal connections between participants, their community, family, and local police.
“Its ultimate goal is to guide students through a comprehensive journey of personal growth and physical development, helping them build the tools they need for a successful future,” Ashleigh said.
“The program not only focuses on improving fitness but also on empowering young people with the confidence, skills, and mindset needed to navigate life’s challenges.
“It aims to create lasting positive change by encouraging students to set higher standards for themselves and their communities.”
Empowering Students for Lasting Change
The program ran for eight weeks, with two one-hour and 20-minute sessions per week for both at-risk students and those displaying leadership qualities in the Year 7 cohort.
“Each Blue EDGE session is a combination of physical fitness training, social engagement, and personal growth,” Ashleigh said.
“Participants begin with 40 minutes of activity led by a personal trainer, followed by a healthy breakfast provided by the Clontarf Cafè.
“After breakfast, a guest speaker shares their insights on a variety of topics, from personal motivation to overcoming adversity, as well as the importance of mental health.
“These speakers include motivational experts, current and former police officers, and individuals from the community who have faced and triumphed over significant challenges.
“The program culminates in an event called The Final EDGE, where participants engage in individual and team-based physical activities.”
Ashleigh said the feedback from students was overwhelmingly positive.
“Many expressed that the program made them more excited to come to school, taught them valuable decision-making skills, and helped them build stronger, more resilient friendships,” she said.
“Clontarf Beach State High School is eager to make the Blue EDGE program a permanent fixture at the school…We’re excited about the possibility of expanding the program to reach more students in 2026.”
