Coins a Commodity in Redcliffe

Coin collecting dates back thousands of years, but in the present era, local groups like our local Numismatic Society – whose name infers the study or collection of currency, including coins, tokens, paper money, medals and related items – are taking it to a whole new level.

The Redcliffe Numismatic Society invites people to attend a monthly meeting and to become a member in order to access tender sales, market nights, important news updates and all the opportunities comprised in future events.

According to Damian Walker, President of the Redcliffe Numismatic Society and author of The Pirate’s Guide to Collecting Australian Coins, many collectors see coin collecting as both a hobby and an investment.

“They enjoy the thrill of the chase and finding items to complete their collections, but they also love finding something that could be valuable,” he said.

Mr Walker said it was a simple and relatively cheap hobby to start, with many people having a story about a coin that first drew their attention and inspired them to go further.

“Some coins and banknotes can go up in value beyond their face value, but many collectors appreciate the items in their collection for the design, so an increase in value is just a bonus,” he said.

Valuable Finds and Redcliffe Numismatic Society Meetings

For those looking for some insight into the most valuable specimens, Mr Walker said there were a number of coins that could fetch several hundred or even over a thousand dollars, depending on their condition.

“Ironically, the most valuable coins are often the hardest to spot, as it’s tiny details that make them stand out,” he said.

In terms of coins that could return more than their face value, Mr Walker mentioned the 2012 red poppy two-dollar coin, the 2013 purple coronation two-dollar coin and a 2007 five-cent coin (which has a mint error in having two ‘heads’ sides).

Mr Walker said that while information regarding coin collecting was readily available on the web, the ability to handle and examine a coin from every angle, as well as the proximity to talk to people in the know, made the club meetings especially worthwhile for collectors.
