Each year, communities worldwide unite for the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.
The campaign runs from 25 November, the UN’s International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, to 10 December, Human Rights Day. It is a global initiative highlighting violence against women and girls, calling for awareness, accountability, and action.
In Redcliffe, the Zonta Club is focused on building a better world for women and girls by advocating for equality, access to education and an end to child marriage and gendered violence.
Zonta Redcliffe Advocacy Chair, Marie Stewart, said the campaign is an opportunity to shine a light on domestic and family abuse in the local community.
“Our theme this year is ‘Respect’,” she said. “We’re putting up banners in highly visible locations and placing orange wooden ladies in local businesses with messages of awareness. Some council buildings and fountains will also be lit with orange lights.
Zonta Redcliffe’s Orange Breakfast and Community Awareness
“Our key event is our Orange Breakfast. It’s a chance for people to come together and showcase local initiatives addressing domestic and family violence. This year, our theme is ‘Collaborating with men.’
“We welcome everyone in the community to join us and hear from our wonderful guest speakers.”
Speakers at the Orange Breakfast include Bob Atkinson AO APM, former Police Commissioner and Co-Chair of the Queensland Government’s Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Council, who brings over 44 years of policing experience and a strong community focus.
The second speaker is Blake Spencer from the Men’s Information and Support Association (MISA), a therapeutic counsellor and facilitator whose workshops teach men how to build respectful, safe and positive relationships.
The breakfast is an opportunity to connect with others who are passionate about change, learn about local initiatives and explore how we can all contribute to safer communities where everybody is respected and treated equally.
Tickets are $45 and can be purchased at here by 19 November.
